Job Description
The Port Captain plays a crucial role in overseeing and managing maritime operations within a specific port(s).
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and supervise the safe arrival, departure, and berthing of vessels in the port. Oversee the loading and unloading of cargo, ensuring efficiency and adherence to guidelines.
- Implement and enforce safety protocols to minimize accidents and incidents and collaborate with port authorities to enhance security measures. Conduct regular safety drills and training for appropriate port personnel.
- Liaise and coordinate with ship captains, pilots, terminal operators, and other stakeholders to facilitate smooth port operations. Communicate with port authorities, customs, and immigration officials to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Develop and implement emergency response plans for incidents such as spills, accidents, or extreme weather events, and coordinate response efforts in case of emergencies
- Maintain accurate records of vessel movements, cargo handling, and incidents. Prepare reports on port activities, performance, and incidents for management and regulatory authorities.
- Provide navigational information to vessels entering or leaving the port and advise on any potential navigational challenges.
- Stay abreast of maritime laws, regulations, and industry best practices. Ensure the port operations adhere to all relevant local, national, and international regulations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation, Nautical Science, or a related field
- Relevant maritime certifications
- Commensurate experience in maritime operations, preferably including time spent aboard vessels in a supervisory role
- Strong knowledge of international shipping regulations, safety standards, and port operations
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Understanding of environmental and security considerations in port operations
